World Ballet Day LIVE takes you behind the scenes

  • September 29, 2016
  • by Laura Di Orio

World Ballet Day LIVE is October 4, when you can watch 20 non-stop hours of behind-the-scenes footage from some of the best ballet companies around the world: The Australian Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, The Royal Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada and San Francisco Ballet. Each company will provide insight into its working process – from morning company class to rehearsals to backstage life at the company.

The first World Ballet Day LIVE was held on October 1, 2014, with a total of 502,823 views worldwide. This year, for the first time, the stream of World Ballet Day LIVE will be shown via Facebook LIVE.

This year’s World Ballet Day LIVE will also feature pre-recorded footage from several other dance organisations, including Hong Kong Ballet, English National Ballet (ENB), Miami City Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and more.

Tiffany Hedman, Capezio Athlete and dancer with ENB, says, “I think it is very important to open up our world to the public. It’s one thing to go watch a show that has been rehearsed to death where the finished product is sparkling clean, and it’s a whole other thing to go inside our studios and follow us on our everyday schedules, where there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get it to where the audience sees that final product.”

Hedman says she is looking forward to going inside the busy studio life of the other companies featured on World Ballet Day LIVE. “We are all really working for one common goal: to pour our heart out to this art form that we love so dearly, and at each moment give it our everything,” she says. “I think every dancer has to have an immense passion for what we do because it is way too hard mentally and physically if you’re not 100 percent in it.”

Viewers are encouraged to get involved on social media by posting photos and videos of their own dancing shoes, using the hashtags #WorldBalletDay and #mydanceshoes.

Hedman will be wearing her favourite dance shoes, Capezio’s Odette 193 pointe shoes, which have been made specially for her foot. “I have been wearing them my whole career, and I truly believe that they have helped get me to where I am today,” she says. “I rely on my pointe shoes as much as I rely on myself to deliver, and they have never let me down.”

For a chance to be featured on Capezio’s social media pages, tag @capezio and hashtag #WeDanceAsOne by October 4. Find Capezio on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Dance.com, Google+, Pinterest, Tumblr and Linkedin.

And be sure to tune in to World Ballet Day LIVE on October 4 for a full day of everything ballet!
