The U.K.’s touring dance convention Can You Dance? (CYD?) is currently in the midst of it’s most epic season yet! The 2016 tour kicked off in early April and is now preparing to head to Norwich, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Leeds in May and June.
CYD? Co-Host and Capezio Athlete Matt Flint shared, “CYD? is bigger and better than it’s ever been. We have lots of new features in the exhibition, great new tutors and more colleges. Around £500,000 worth of tuition will be awarded throughout the season to dancers who catch the eye of all the top performing arts colleges we have in attendance.â€
Each CYD? event offers young dancers a chance to showcase their abilities, take masterclasses, and browse a dance exhibition. Designed by dancers for dancers, the convention prides itself on presenting major awards, like full scholarships to various colleges. This is one of Flint’s favourite parts.
“I love the fact that we get to help dancers get into college and achieve the next step of their dream. We’re now seeing previous successful CYD? scholarship winners return to perform as part of the college showcase,†he said.
One new addition to the 2016 tour is “Lights, Camera, Action!â€, which Flint said was “a massive hit†at the Worcester event on April 3. “The dancers have one minute to hear a song, get dressed into a relevant costume, then perform their best attempt at the choreography,†he explained.
Barnaby Thompson, the musical theatre/jazz tutor at the Worcester convention, reflected on the event: “I can honestly say I had a brilliant time. It was fantastic to see so many excited children under one roof working hard and most importantly, having fun. It’s such a great setup with lots to see and do throughout the day and the amount of talent on show in the Worcester area was scary. I’m glad I’m not younger and having to compete with them all or else I might not have been fortunate to work as much as I have done! All in all, I definitely recommend CYD? to anyone young (or old) and interested in dance.â€
In addition to Flint and Thompson, who is now in rehearsals for a new dance thriller production of Jekyll & Hyde, the list of CYD? tutors includes: Co-Host Tom Shilcock (X Factor, So You Think You Can Dance, Britain’s Got Talent, Rihanna, Elton John), Dominic Lawrence (Michael Jackson in Thriller Live, Chris Brown, Cheryl Cole), Madeleine Waters (Pineapple Dance Studios and Studio 68), Chloe Ferns (X Factor, 2015 Britain’s Got Talent, 2013 Strictly Come Dancing), Ryan Lee-Seager (U.K. and Ireland Blood Brothers tour, U.K. Fame Tour Dance Captain, ensemble in Rent), Layla Ellison (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Cheryl Cole, Black Eyed Peas, Leona Lewis, plus Paul Roberts choreographic assistant), Paris Green (FKA twigs, Cheryl Cole, Anastasia, Ellie Goulding, X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Thriller Live), Adrian Gas (choreographer for The Voice, Dancing On Ice, Got To Dance), Sophie Carmen Jones (currently Velma in U.K. Chicago tour) and Darren Carnall (choreographer for The Ruling Class and associate choreographer on West End hit show Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.)
This impressive list of tutors is one of the many reasons Capezio chose to sponsor the convention tour again this year.
Maddy Gladman, Capezio’s Sales & Marketing Director for Europe, said, “We are excited to be the main and official sponsor of CYD? The events are amazing for dancers of all ages, abilities and genres. Without doubt CYD? is going from strength to strength and will continue to support the world that is dance.â€
